I have been blogging for almost 3 years now and I would honestly say that 2 of those years were wasted making huge blogging mistakes that made it hard for me to continue blogging. But then one day I took a deeper look at why I blog and decided to take it a bit more seriously. Almost overnight, I started to see instant results on my follower count, likes, and comments. What changed? Let’s talk about how to 2x your blog post results almost overnight.

Identify Your Blogs Purpose

The first tip I have for new bloggers is to make the purpose of your blog and your website clear and concise.

I’m still working through the kinks on this problem myself, but it’s worth exploring. Unless your blog is exclusively about 1 topic, you need to spend some serious time thinking about what you want to write about.

Some topics get a lot of attention, others don’t. Your blog post about that crazy thing that happened to you that one time… Not gonna do well.

But that blog post that serves as a how – to guide about a topic you are already an expert on… That might do pretty well.

Write Every Day in Your Blog

I don’t mean you need to write an entire blog post a day. And it doesn’t need to be a thousand words. But getting in the habit of jotting down a blog idea every day or flushing out a blog concept can help you keep your content updated and fresh.

I also don’t mean you should publish every day. But an outlined blog in your drafts is a lot closer to a finished blog than an idea in your head.

Much like how authors who wrote Every day get closer to a finished book, bloggers who wrote Every day will get closer to building a real audience.

Be Concise and Specific in your Blogs.

The biggest mistake I made in my first few blogs was trying to cram too much information into a single 600 word blog post.

Let’s be clear, you are not going to be able to explain a concept you learned in college in 500 words. But you might be able to highlight a concept well enough for it to stick.

Each blog post needs to be specific enough that you won’t find yourself drifting into a dozen side topics. Pick a lane, stick to it, and write it well.

Use Blog Optimized Formatting and Writing

This one took me the longest to learn. Blogging is not like writing in your 12th grade English class where a paragraph was a minimum of 4 sentences.

Blogging is best when it’s quickly digestible, easily understandable, and concise. I try to keep every paragraph under 3 sentences and split up my big concepts by headings.

Focus on your headings

In blogging, about 90% of your work is your headings… Not the content between them. Yes it’s important to write good paragraphs but there are actually 2 reasons why headings are so important.

Reason 1: Search Engines use headings to identify what your blog is about.

Remember that search engines are really just code robots that have been taught how to read the internet efficiently. To be most efficient, your blog will be interpreted as the content of your headings, not the entire page.

Reason 2: Readers browse the headings to find what content they want to read.

If your blog is just paragraphs and paragraphs of text with nothing to split it up, you won’t retain very many users.

Use Your Own Blog Images!

WordPress is great at showing you how to blog, but in the process put you into some bad habits.

I can’t tell you how bad it is to see the exact same pixels stock image on the same five blog posts over and over.

And if I can tell, so can your visitors.

Instead, take a few minutes out of your day during your scheduled blog posting time and take an image with your phone to use as your primary header image.

Or better yet, use a custom template to design your own graphic for each blog post. I’ve been doing this for the last 6 months and it has been a game changer for my blog.

Thanks for reading! After exploring a bunch of topics, I’ve decided to settle a little bit more into topics that I’m more familiar with like virtual reality, the Oculus Quest 2, and the products that make video games fun.
