The Quest 2 is an amazing VR headset that allows most people to gain access to the Metaverse for a relatively low cost. But recently, a couple of big developments might make you reconsider whether you buy quest 2 today or if it’s wise to wait… Is an Oculus Quest 2 even worth it?
Is the Quest 2 a good headset?
The Quest 2 is still a very very capable VR headset. The Quest 2 has a great 2K display for each eye, wireless hand tracking, and doesn’t even require a Facebook account anymore.
Plus, if you are an avid PC gamer, you can link up the Oculus Quest 2 to your PC to support higher graphics fidelity.
Additionally, the Oculus Quest 2 supports a 120 HZ refresh rate as an experimental feature. I wouldn’t recommend turning this on if you don’t have your headset connected to a powerful personal computer, because it will chew through your battery life.
But if you are just looking for a good way to play beat saber, the Oculus Quest 2 is still a good buy.
Why the Quest Pro is Not Worth $1400
It’s very clear from the starting price of the Quest Pro that it’s not meant to target the same people the Quest 2 was targeting.
The quest pro more than triples the current price of the Quest 2, brings less than substantial updates and doesn’t even really mention many updates in terms of processing power.
In the quest 2 launch video which you can watch below, the three features mentioned are:
- Full color mixed reality (passthrough)
- Self tracking controllers
- “Next gen” optics.
If that sounds like just more tech marketing at work, you would be right. These are not substantial enough upgrades to ask for 3x more upfront cash.
Is the Oculus Quest 2 a good VR investment?
Virtual reality as a video game and social platform hasn’t taken a lot of big strides lately. Depending on what you like to do, and what you are hoping to get out of virtual reality the quest too is still probably a great budget option for most people.
But there are still a lot of big improvements happening in the virtual reality space that might make you consider buying a different headset or waiting for a new release.
Many people in VR consider virtual reality gaming to be in its PlayStation 2 era. This makes sense because the Oculus Quest 2 only cost about 399 US dollars and can play many different styles and types of games. Everything from the traditional beats saber game to VR chat to population 1 can be played on this great headset.
And since many games are still being supported for the original Oculus quest, it’s reasonable to assume that new headsets from Meta won’t result in a discontinued device.
The Oculus Quest Pro is $1400!
On The Joe Rogan Experience, Mark Zuckerberg teased the announcement of the Oculus Quest pro. In the podcast, Mark Zuckerberg commented on future technologies that could come to the Oculus gaming platform.
Zuckerberg claims that the quest pro is going to be better at bridging the Gap between artificial reality and virtual reality.
If you’re unfamiliar, the artificial reality is similar to the idea of broadcasting holograms into real space while virtual reality is creating a virtual environment that helps mask the state of reality.
I personally came away from that podcast believing that there were very few features of the Oculus Quest pro that are going to be significantly different from the Oculus Quest 2. So if you are worried that your $400 investment in the metaverse is going to be worthless in the next few months, I think you can reasonably plan on being able to use the Oculus Quest 2 as a serious VR headset for the next 3 to 5 years.
Quest 2 just went up by $100. That tells me that meta still plans on supporting it for another couple years and wants to make sure they won’t lose too much money on that development. If meta didn’t plan on continuing to support the Oculus Quest too, it would make more sense just to sell out existing inventory and cut losses.
Conclusion: The Quest Pro is not Worth the Upgrade
The best advice I can give to new VR enthusiasts is to still just buy the Quest 2. It is still an amazing VR headset that can do most if not all the same important things the Quest Pro can do.
