About 3 years ago, I got the marketing advice that changed my life. I was interviewing a mentor of mine for a class and I asked the question: “with how vast and constantly changing the marketing industry is, how do you find a career?” They responded pretty simply stating that “there are really two ways of persuing a career in marketing. You can become a hyper specialized career type or you can become a jack of all trades.” And as I have looked into the marketing world as a whole, the longer I realize how accurate that statement really is.

See you can hyper specialized in a given marketing skills etc, which can become extremely resourceful and can pay a lot of money. For example, you can become a go to person for data analytics, a go to person for SEO, the go to person for digital design, the go to person for branding, or a whole score of other marketing skillets. The advantage here is you can become an indispensable person in an industry. The disadvantage with this pathway is you can also be undervalued.

When you are the only person at work who does what you do, it can be really hard to communicate that value to people who don’t quite understand the importance of your skills or knowledge base. Frequently in this position you may find yourself underwhelmed by you pay in comparison to people in similar job fields. Additionally, when others don’t quite understand your field of expertise, you might find yourself overworked and overwhelmed at being the only person who can complete a task with inadequate timeliness to complete a task.

Dont Start with your niche, Start with Everyone.

When it comes to marketing, one of the biggest decisions you will make is whether to choose a niche or a general field of study. While there are benefits and drawbacks to both, it ultimately depends on your goals and resources.

Choosing a niche can be beneficial because it allows you to become an expert in a specific area. This can help you stand out from the competition and attract a more targeted audience. By focusing on a niche, you can also tailor your marketing efforts to a specific group of people, which can lead to higher conversion rates. However, choosing a niche can also limit your potential audience and may require more effort to reach a broader market.

On the other hand, picking a general field of study can provide more opportunities for growth and can make it easier to pivot your marketing strategy as needed. This approach can also help you reach a broader audience, which can be beneficial if you are looking to scale your business. However, a general field of study may also make it harder to stand out from the competition, and you may struggle to connect with your target audience in a meaningful way.

In the end, there is no right or wrong answer. It simply comes down to what makes the most sense for you and you may chose to do something diffeently later in life.
