Did you know that about 60% of all websites are built with WordPress? It’s amazing that a simple CMS that started as an open-source blogging tool became one of the biggest avenues for people to make and manage websites effectively. With a few years of web design experience myself, I’ll provide you with a step-by-step guide to get started with WordPress web design for dummies.

3 Basic WordPress Web Design Tips for Dummies:

In 2023, there are a lot of services out there that will let you build and design a website. WordPress will require a bit of knowledge but nothing too complicated for an average individual. Without getting into the technical details, there are a few tips I have picked up along the way I think will be helpful for first timers:

  1. WireFrame first, Design second. Wireframing refers to the process of creatiung a “skeleton” of your website that has basically no design elements incorporated. This allows you to create and design what pages go where before you get into the nitty-gritty details. You can use plenty of amazing tools out there for wireframing like Sketch, or even just drawing it out on a piece of paper.
  2. Decide on Colors, Logo, and Fonts early. This is huge because these elements will be used everywhere on your website so it’s important you like what you see before you have dozens of pages built with branding you don’t.
  3. Simple is almost always better than complex: Web design needs to be both pretty, but also simple to interact with. Yes, complex designs like what I did with Hbagile.com can be cool, but at the end of the day, you need people to enjoy being on your website which won’t happen if your design is too hard to read or interact with.

How to Setup a WordPress Website in 2023 in 4 easy steps:

Step 1: Choose a Hosting Service

There are dozens of great hosting services out there that can help you get started. I recommend choosing at least a hosting service that offers “Managed WordPress Hosting” which is fancy lingo for website hosting designed for WordPress websites.

What is WordPress hosting?

WordPress hosting, or hosting broadly speaking refers to the computer that has all your website’s files on it. WordPress hosting is often priced between $2 and $40 per month depending on how fancy you go. Most people can probably get away with using traditional hosting services provided by companies like StellarWP, NameCheap, and WPEngine.

Step 2: Choose your domain:

Choosing your domain is pretty simple. You find a domain name that is close to or exactly what you want, buy it, and then you are done! But for SEO purposes it can be helpful to have multiple versions of one domain name just in case people only remember one element from your domain name. For example, my website is called metapv.co but it can also be accessed at metaversemarketing.com just in case you only remember one of those domains.

I really like name.com for hosting and domain names if you want to use my affiliate link here: https://name.sjv.io/jrmQav

Step 3: Install WordPress on your host

If you went with a WordPress managed host solution, it may be a little different but its usually as simple as a single click. In fact, many web hosting providers offer one-click WordPress installations. Follow their instructions to set up WordPress on your hosting server.

Step 4: Connect it to your domain

Connecting your domain to your host if you bought them in different locations can seem like a big deal but it’s really quick and simple. All you need to do is add the A records from your domain name to the host DNS records. Once you do that and hit save, it may take up to 48 hours to save properly, so don’t panic if your website isn’t up immediately afterward.

Remember, web design is a continuous process, and you can always make improvements and refine your website over time. WordPress offers plenty of resources, forums, and tutorials, making it easier for beginners to learn and grow their web design skills. Happy designing!
