I was reading a book today called the “Spatial Web” to study the concept of Web3 and the Metaverse. As I researched, I realized that most people don’t realize the true reality of the Metaverse Zuckerberg wants to create. That’s because the metaverse and the technology behind it is so far ahead of what others are doing right now that the actual metaverse is really just ahead of it’s time. With that in mind, I want to prove to you that you don’t yet understand what the metaverse concept is really about. So let me explain the metaverse concept as I believe Mark Zuckerberg is trying to build.

What is the Metaverse Anyway?

The Metaverse, is not straightforward. Most people probably think the metaverse is VR and a universe that exists only digitally inside VR.

Most people would be wrong.

In fact, the future of the metaverse is intrinsically tied to the 3D version of the internet. Unfortunately, 99% of the internet right now is still two-dimensional.

We’ve made really big strides in terms of getting towards a 3D internet. The requirements are actually very easy to understand to build a 3D internet. You need devices that can read, report, and dynamically interact with 3D space.

Now if that sounds like a VR headset to you, you’d be partially right.

The Metaverse Is Not Just VR.

The ideal metaverse that Mark Zuckerberg is trying to build out is a version of the internet that connects reality to a 3D internet.

What is the Metaverse?

I think the best way to describe the idea of the metaverse is to describe it as a 3D internet that Bridges a completely digital world with a 3D space built in reality.

That’s a pretty far out concept so let’s try and bring it down to earth a little bit.

Imagine you are inside an empty square room. The empty square room is maybe 10 ft wide by 10 ft long and goes about 10 ft high. It would look something like the graphic below.

An objective reality room.

The Metaverse is the idea that with the right technology, you could replace the room with anything you want to be ‘anywhere’ you want to be.

You could be at work, at school, at a concert, or in the matrix! The limits are your imagination.

The Metaverse Room

Especially as real estate continues to become a global issue and the recession is forcing more people to make do with less, being able to turn any space into anything else quickly is a fast way to improve your financial, social or entertainment situation.

People can go to class, eat dinner with family, get high-quality entertainment, and attend concerts all from the same room!

The problem is, we don’t really have the tech or the resources yet to make this idea a reality.

To do so, you need to start by creating the digital 3D space (like the matrix) and then find technology to connect it to actual 3D space.

Mark Zuckerberg started by creating the 3D VR verse that can overlay on top of your 3d space, but we don’t quite have the bridge built yet.

How do you Bridge Reality and the VR Digital Space?

The short answer here is Artificial Reality or AR. In a way, we already also have the building blocks of the bridge.

Apps like Pokemon Go or Apple’s AR lenses can create an AR asset that sits in its place. But the problem is there’s no way to enter the metaverse that these assets sit inside to interact with those assets.

A real and artificial hydrogen peroxide bottle.

The actualized metaverse will come to fruition when you can draw a 3D asset using your phone, set it there permanently then put on your VR headset and interact with it. In the above photo, I was able to create a duplicate of the hydrogen peroxide bottle and move it to a new place on my phone.

But in the metaverse, I should be able to grab that bottle, and move it back into the table.

What is the 3D Internet of Reality?

A 3D internet of reality is more of a concept than a legit structure right now. But in short, the 3D internet of reality attempts to connect legitimate real space with a 3D reconstruction of that space.

The 3D internet refers to a deeper sense of digital connection in all of our lives. Imagine every street light being able to communicate with your car. Imagine every door opens when you are close enough to enter. Imagine being able to make friends across the planet and materialize them beside you after class.

All these things are now technologically feasible with the 3d internet. Are they coming soon? No, probably not for 15-30 years. But are they possible? Absolutely.

This is the idea of the Metaverse. But before the metaverse can interact with reality, we need to finish building the laws and norms of the Metaverse. That’s the goal.

Let me know what you think about this kind of article. A lot of my theory-crafting and research came from a great book on Amazon called the Spatial Web. If you are interested, I’ll include a referral link below to purchase on Kindle or Amazon.
